Read the limit before the passage
Completion questions may specify a limit such as no more than two words and/or a number. Official IELTS guidance states that answers over the stated limit lose the mark.
Treat format as part of the question
Check whether the answer should be words from the text, a letter, or a selected option. Then search for the relevant information.
Review errors by category
Separate comprehension errors from instruction, spelling, and word-limit errors. Each category needs a different correction.
