Read an IELTS Writing Task 1 line graph before you describe it
An IELTS Writing Task 1 line graph shows how one or more values change over a period of time. The horizontal axis carries the time period, the vertical axis carries the measured quantity, and each line follows a single group, place, or category across that period.
Academic Task 1 asks you to summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and to make comparisons where relevant. That instruction is the whole job: select first, compare second, and support with figures third.
Two habits cost marks on this task. The first is the number list, where every value on every line is reported in order and no shape ever emerges for the reader. The second is the missing overview, where the detail is accurate but nothing tells the reader what happened overall.
Both are avoidable, because a graph of this kind almost always contains a small number of real trends and only a handful of moments worth quoting.
This guide gives six practical steps and one original worked graph. The data, the labels, and the sample sentences below were written as teaching material for this article. They are not real test questions and they are not official answers. Use official IELTS, British Council, IDP, and Cambridge materials for current format and assessment information.
See one original graph become an overview and two body paragraphs
Here is the original teaching graph for this article. It shows the percentage of households in one imaginary city that owned three devices between 2005 and 2025: desktop computers, smartphones, and tablets. Desktop ownership starts highest at 65 per cent. Smartphone ownership starts lowest at 5 per cent. Tablets do not appear on the graph until 2010.
Those three starting positions already tell you that two of the lines will cross somewhere, and a crossing point is usually worth reporting.
Now read the shapes rather than the individual points. Desktop ownership falls steadily across the whole period, from 65 per cent to 30 per cent. Smartphone ownership rises steeply to 60 per cent by 2015, then keeps rising more slowly to 92 per cent.
Tablet ownership climbs to a peak of 40 per cent in 2015 and then falls back to 25 per cent. Smartphones overtake desktops at around 2012, which is the single clearest event on the graph.
One overview sentence can carry all of that. Overall, smartphone ownership rose sharply and became the most common device, while desktop ownership declined throughout the period; tablet ownership rose to a mid-period peak before falling back. No figures appear in that sentence, and none are needed there.
The numbers belong in the body paragraphs, where each trend is supported by two or three chosen values rather than by every value on the graph.

Step 1: read the axes, units, and time span before writing
Spend the first minute on the labels, not on the lines. Read the title, the unit on the vertical axis, the range of the horizontal axis, and the legend that names each line.
A report that describes the right shape in the wrong unit loses accuracy marks that were never in doubt, and the fix takes seconds at the start rather than a rewrite at the end.
Units matter more than most learners expect. Per cent of households is not the same as number of households, and a graph measured in thousands needs the word thousand in your sentences.
If the vertical axis does not start at zero, note that too, because a small change can look dramatic on the page while remaining small in the data.
Check the time span and the interval between points. Twenty years measured every five years gives you five readings per line, not twenty. Knowing how many real readings exist stops you from inventing values between the marked points and tells you how much supporting detail is actually available to quote.
- Read the title and both axis labels aloud in your head.
- Write the unit down before you write any sentence.
- Note the first year, the last year, and the interval.
- Match each line in the legend to its label.
Step 2: paraphrase the question in one opening sentence
Your first sentence should restate what the graph shows in your own words. Change the nouns and the structure, keep the meaning and the numbers exactly as given. The graph shows becomes the graph illustrates or the line graph compares. Between 2005 and 2025 becomes over a twenty-year period.
The result is one accurate sentence that proves you understood the visual.
Do not copy the wording from the question line for line. Copied wording is not counted as your own language, so a report that opens with the exact prompt sentence starts with nothing the examiner can credit.
Equally, do not invent information that is not on the graph, such as a reason for a trend or an event that might explain it.
Keep this sentence short. One clause naming the visual, one naming what it measures, and one naming the period is enough. The overview follows immediately afterwards, and the reader should reach your first real content within two sentences of starting.
- Shows becomes illustrates, compares, or gives information about.
- Between 2005 and 2025 becomes over a twenty-year period.
- Percentage of households becomes proportion of homes.
- Keep every number and unit exactly as printed.
- Never open by copying the prompt sentence unchanged.
Step 3: choose the two or three features that belong in the overview
The overview is a selection, not a summary of everything. Two or three features are enough for almost any graph of this kind. Look for the line that ends highest, the line that changes most, the direction each line takes overall, and any point where two lines cross or where a line reverses direction.
In the worked graph, three features do the work: smartphones rise and finish highest, desktops fall throughout, and tablets rise then fall. Everything else on the graph is detail that supports one of those three statements. Choosing them takes about a minute and makes the rest of the report almost mechanical to write.
Signal the overview clearly with overall or in general, and place it either directly after the introduction or at the very end. Directly after the introduction is safer under time pressure, because a report that runs short of time still contains the feature the examiner is looking for rather than losing it with the unwritten final paragraph.

Step 4: group the lines that behave in the same way
Body paragraphs are easier to write when the lines are grouped by behaviour rather than taken one at a time. Put rising lines together, falling lines together, and irregular lines together. With three lines you usually get two paragraphs: one for the clearest pair, one for the remaining line and any comparison worth making.
For the worked graph, one paragraph can hold the rise of smartphones alongside the fall of desktops, because the crossing point connects them naturally. The second paragraph then handles tablets on their own, since the peak and the reversal do not match either of the other shapes. That structure produces comparison without any extra effort.
Grouping also protects your linking language. When two lines genuinely contrast, while and whereas are accurate. When they move together, similarly and likewise are accurate. Choosing the grouping first means the connector describes something real instead of being added to make the paragraph sound more academic.
- Sort the lines into rising, falling, and irregular.
- Pair the two lines with the clearest relationship.
- Give the remaining line its own paragraph.
- Choose the connector after the grouping, not before.
Step 5: support each trend with chosen figures, not every value
Each trend statement needs evidence, and two or three figures usually supply it. A start value, an end value, and one turning point are enough to prove a shape.
Desktop ownership fell from 65 per cent in 2005 to 30 per cent in 2025 is complete support; adding the 2010, 2015, and 2020 readings adds length without adding meaning.
Quote figures with their unit and their year attached. A bare number is ambiguous, and an unattached number is the most common accuracy slip on this task. When a value sits between marked points, use approximately, around, or just over rather than inventing a precise reading the graph does not give you.
Vary how you attach the data. A figure can sit in the verb phrase, rose to 92 per cent, in a bracketed aside, or in a separate short sentence after the trend statement. Three different attachments across a report read as range; the same structure five times reads as a template, even when every number is correct.
- Start value, end value, and one turning point.
- Always attach the unit and the year to the number.
- Use approximately for readings between marked points.
- Report a change as a figure or as a proportion, not both.
- Stop adding numbers once the shape is proved.
Step 6: check tense, units, and the 150-word minimum
Leave three minutes for checking. Past data takes past forms throughout, and a graph that includes projected years takes future forms for those years only. Mixing the two inside one sentence is common under time pressure and is easy to catch on a deliberate read-through of the verbs alone.
Check the count as well as the language. Academic Task 1 requires at least 150 words, and a report below that length is penalised regardless of how accurate it is. Learn what 150 words looks like in your own handwriting or typing so that you can estimate without counting during the test.
Finish with a targeted scan rather than a general reread. Look at the units once, the years once, the comparative forms once, and the singular and plural agreement once. Four narrow passes catch more real errors than one broad pass, and each one takes under a minute on a report of this length.
Practise IELTS Writing Task 1 line graph reports in a weekly routine
Short repeated practice beats one long session. On day one, write overviews only, three of them, with no supporting figures at all. On day two, group lines and write one body paragraph. On day three, practise attaching data three different ways. On day four, write one complete report in twenty minutes.
On day five, review that report against a single target rather than rescoring it.
Review with evidence. Mark one sentence where the unit went missing, one where the tense slipped, and one where a number was quoted without adding meaning. Fix that single target in the next attempt. A session that produces one observable change is worth more than a session that produces a general feeling about your writing.

Frequently asked questions
How long should an IELTS Writing Task 1 line graph report be?
Official IELTS information sets a minimum of 150 words for Academic Task 1 and recommends spending about 20 minutes on it. Writing roughly 160 to 190 words leaves room to check.
Do I need an overview if the graph has only one line?
Yes. A single line still has an overall direction, a highest point, and a lowest point. Summarise the shape of the whole line, then support it with a start value, an end value, and any turning point.
Should I describe every year shown on the graph?
No. Selecting is part of the task. Report the overall shapes, then quote a small number of figures that prove them. A complete list of values usually scores lower than a well-selected report of the same length.
Can I explain why a trend happened?
No. Task 1 asks you to report the information shown. Reasons, opinions, and predictions that the graph does not contain are outside the task and cannot be credited, even when they sound plausible.
Which tense should I use?
Match the time on the horizontal axis. Past years take past forms, and any projected years take future forms. Keep the two apart, and check the verbs on their own pass at the end.
